A Comprehensive Approach Toward Dyscalculia

tutoring san antonio dyscalculia
Dyscalculia is different than dyslexia. They often coexist, but the focus of your child’s school tends to remain on the dyslexia portion of the learning difference. It’s also not the same as being bad at math or having math anxiety. Math anxiety can be quite debilitating, but it involves a different brain mechanism than dyscalculia.

Sitting at the table with your child teaching the same basic math skills over and over can be exasperating for even the most patient of parents. Your child can finally learn how to solve a type of math problem but then can’t remember how to do it the very next day. Panic sets in and anxiety about your child’s future plays out several different scenarios of your child not being able to go to college, get a job, or move out of the house.

Dyscalculia doesn’t just affect your ability to do math, but it also interferes with other basic abilities as well. Managing time is a common issue that causes tardiness, grossly underestimating the amount of time it can take to complete a task, and the ability to recall or understand a sequence of steps or instructions to complete a task. Poor navigational results in getting lost easily and becoming disoriented.

How We Help

Building a larger working memory is just one of the ways we help these students. One of the ways we achieve this is by putting away calculators. It sounds dreadful and it is – in the beginning, but over time, the brain keeps basic math skills accessible and encourages neuronal connections to form pathways for mathematical thinking.

Algebra is going to be tough, but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. They won’t count on their fingers forever!
